Science Olympiad

CEF Registration Form

All students participating in CUSD Science Olympiad must complete the CEF Science Olympiad registration form linked below (to be completed by guardian).

This program provides Carlsbad Unified students the opportunity to join a Science Olympiad team that focuses on promoting teamwork, offers collaboration with local scientists, and exposes students to science outside of the classroom. All CUSD Science Olympiad teams are funded by the Carlsbad Educational Foundation, with CEF investing over $40,000 annually for the program. The approximate cost for each student to participate in the program is over $250 per season. A recommended donation of $50 per student is requested from each family to help cover the costs of programming. This non-refundable donation is fully tax deductible.

Become A Mentor!

We are currently recruiting mentors in the community who have an interest and passion for science to get involved in the Carlsbad Science Olympiad program. There are four ways to be a mentor:

1. Coach – Prepare & source teaching material, create a weekly class outline/lesson, set practice expectations, communications, hands-on instruction for build events, clarify rules, ensure safety, etc.

2. Asst. Coach – Assist with supervision, delivering material, communications, hands-on instruction for building events, and ensuring safety.

3. Aid – Provide additional supervision/practice support on a regular basis (no science experience needed).

4. Practice Volunteer – Provide additional supervision/practice support as needed (no science experience needed).

There are 25+ events to choose from when considering to be a mentor. Event practices meet weekly with students in person at Viasat or virtually as needed and are typically 1 to 1.5 hours every week per event. The season runs October through February and students compete in March at the San Diego Regional Science Olympiad Competition.

If you are interested, please complete our interest form by Friday, September 22 by clicking on the Be a Mentor button below. If you have any questions, please email scienceolympiad@carlsbaded.org. We look forward to hearing from you!

What is Science Olympiad?

Science Olympiad is a team ‘sport’ for STEAM enthusiasts that challenges you to explore, collaborate, inquire, and learn! Work in teams to cross-train for a variety of events and compete with other students at the San Diego Regional Science Olympiad Competition!

High School, College, and Career-Ready

The Carlsbad Educational Foundation is honored to work with its local science and engineering partner, Viasat, and the Carlsbad Unified School District to provide middle and high school students the incredible opportunity to observe, experience and explore STEM careers. Student groups are mentored by adult science enthusiasts who are often professional scientist and/or engineers in the field.

Hands-On STEM Competition

Science Olympiad competitions are like academic track meets, consisting of a series of 23 team events in each division (Division B is middle school; Division C is high school). Each year, a portion of the events are rotated to reflect the ever-changing nature of genetics, earth science, chemistry, anatomy, physics, geology, mechanical engineering, and technology.

STEM Skills and Fun!

Teamwork is a required skill in most scientific careers today, and Science Olympiad encourages group learning by designing events that forge alliances. Even if you don’t think you are a “science person,” you will learn that you have skills to contribute to the group’s success.

Why YOU should Join Science Olympiad
  • Great addition to your academic resume.
  • Improve your study skills.
  • Learn more about subjects that interest you.
  • A sense of accomplishment.
